something odd

Firefox did something weird to me this morning.

When I came to the computer, I had left the browser open and it was hung up on a site I was looking at last night. So I closed it and opened it back up after a couple of minutes. It asked me to select a user account. I've never set up any accounts, so this seemed wierd. When I tried to open default, it told me that it was already in use and I should create a new account. So I thought I'd give that a shot. A new Firefox window opened, but without any of my settings (of course). But when I tried to import bookmarks, etc., it found my old Netscape ones and put those in. I restarted the computer, determined to get to my usual profile. When I started up Firefox again, I was able to log on with the old default (my usual) settings.

That was odd, but what has me concerned is losing my settings and bookmarks. I just ordered a new computer and I want to be able to install Firefox the way I like it. But I can't seem to find a way to export settings and bookmarks. Am I missing something here?

Okay, I found the export feature for bookmarks! It's not exactly in an obvious place (esp. if you are coming from IE).

What you should have done is opened the task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) and killed the Firefox process. Opening firefox after that should have been normal.

That happens to me sometimes in Mozilla. I always do the ctrl+alt+delete thing, but you have to make sure to kill ALL instances of the program. Sometimes it'll be running more than once. I've seen it running 3 times before. I didn't have to restart or anything after that. I just reopened Mozilla and Voila! All my settings and bookmarks are back to normal. :)
